I agree with what Jon says about diets, although I think the single biggest error they make is the emphasis on "low fat" and they push high-carb menus as if that's supposed to make you thin. Carbs invoke insulin into the blood stream, and insulin inhibits the use of fat for energy. That puts you on a perpetual cycle of low energy, eat carbs, still low energy, eat more carbs, etc.
And of course typical diets will put your body in starvation mode which triggers obvious fat programs there.
If you have to restrict to show that you're "dieting", try restricting the most obviously toxic and offensive foods out there: refined sugar and starch. The rest of it, eat whatever you crave for, and when you can steer yourself more towards the natural, low-tech, unprocessed, raw, etc.
Also try to interpret cravings. A craving for cherry ice cream might be the body's cry for the nutrients in cherries, and the protein in the milk used for the ice cream. And so forth.
